Happy Birthday, America!

We didn't do much for the 4th of July...but it seemed like a REALLY busy weekend. On Saturday the 2nd I hosted a little get together of old friends at our house. It worked out great, because I think I live in the most central location. It was super HOT outside, the kids played outside a bit but even they struggled. Rachel was here, Andrea and her two kids Hannah and Daniel and Alisha came with Caitlyn...who is a total mini-Lish. Of course I couldn't find my camera while they were here and I didn't want to waste precious time looking. We had lunch primarily provided by Mitch, he manned the grill in the heat and got some corn on the cob cooked up for us. I made a few side salads. Rachel brought buns and chips, Alisha brought a fruit salad and Andrea brought these AWESOME coconut chocolate cookies...which reminds me that I need to get that recipe :)

Most of all though it was just awesome for us to be able to sit and catch up and gossip...even with our kids pulling us in every direction and running around like crazy. It always leaves me excited for the next time. On Sunday we took a quick trip to Charleston. Matt called and asked Mitch if he wanted to golf and of course he did. So they golfed and afterwards we all enjoyed the Mattoon Country Club pool together. Macy did great jumping off the diving board and we even got Colby to jump off once, almost giving Cynthia a heart attack! We had a quick dinner back at mom's and a cake appropriately topped with red and blue sprinkles. We sang Happy Birthday to America and hit the road just in time to get to Mt. Zion for the fireworks show. The Girls LOVED it. Leah was so excited and the noise of it all didn't bother them a bit. They were both fast asleep when we got home...which only took 10 minutes and it was a special moment for Mitch and I, each caring a sleeping babe, cradling them in our arms as we took them up and laid them in their beds. I loved it.

Monday the 4th started out gloomy with scattered rain here and there but by noon it had cleared off. We had lunch packed up the girls and went to Scovill Zoo...what fun! It's a small zoo, but just enough to keep my girls occupied. Leah loves the peacocks, the lemurs (monkey's) and the red tailed panda...and don't forget the EMU. She was such a brave girl and even held a corn snake in the reptile house. We ended the day with a carousel ride and went home and spent the rest of the afternoon playing in and outdoors. The girls were so exhausted from the weekend that they crashed before the fireworks on the 4th in Decatur. Which is too bad because they are on lake Decatur within walking distance from our house...there is always next year.
