What a wild ride it’s been!!! Today we had our 2020-2021 swim banquet. A year ago we had no coach, no swim, and no idea what was in store for our team. In June we were able to register for a lane to lap swim. In August we got a coach! Yay Lauren Nesbitt! September and October were relatively normal and then boom...shut down again!!! Back to lap swim, no real practice. Meets were cancelled, the calendar kept right on moving, and in January we ALL had Covid. Ugh!!! Back to the pool in February, started having meets. USA Regionals cancelled, Y state cancelled. Knee cap dislocated and then a modified Y state. What a season! Big shoutout to our coaching staff for staying organized, going with the flow and not losing their sanity.
Today Hattie received the Sportsmanship award...always cheering on her teammates. She doesn’t hesitate to share her lane and no one is surprised by her big heart and ability to be kind. Leah received a Golden Gator award for swimming all events Y swim this year. She was so close for USA swimming but with fewer meets and a major injury it just didn’t happen. Kiersten walked away with some pretty good awards. She was the MVP of the girls 11-12 age group, she received the IMR award for USA swimming...and she took home the girls top honor, Swimmer of the Season. She’s the biggest cheerleader...doesn’t matter who or what race, if she can she’s at the edge of the pool cheering them on. She gives 110% in everything she does, never skipping a set. So proud of her.
Through it all these girls still showed up at the pool and gave it their all. I’m proud of them and their determination. And while the next year will be a challenge as they have to learn to swim with a new team, we’ll be happy to return. Because YDSC Gators will always be home.
