Here She Goes

It finally happened, she got brave...and on Friday, July 12th she finally took those first steps. We knew they were coming. She's been RUNNING around the furniture for weeks. She started out small; 3-4 steps then back down. But in no time at all she was going a little further each time. And now there is no stopping her. Little sister is walking all over. She's even climbing stairs now too. Leah and Bug get so excited to watch her progress. They usually announce to Mitch and I when she is standing or taking steps.

On the 14th, we were at mom's for family dinner. Cynthia peeked around the corner and saw her taking some steps and freaked out. She thought we were missing the first ones. It was funny. At first she would only take a few steps and then go down for crawling because she realized it was much quicker but those days are done. I think she just likes all the positive attention she is getting. What a little ham. Love my sweet Hattiecakes!

Leah's First Medical Emergency

Yesterday it happened! One of my girls had an accident and not just a little one. A pretty good one that had me running to the emergency room. We had went swimming in Mattoon with Gigi and on our way home we stopped for groceries. Leah was helping me carry bags in the house when she tripped and fell shattering a bottle of wine and slicing her leg open. When she stood up both legs were covered and blood was spraying everywhere. I grabbed her, put her in the front seat told her to hold a towel on it and hightailed it across Lost Bridge to St. Mary's ER (which is about a half mile away, Thank God). When we got there I parked in the ambulance bay and ran in saying I needed help. They rushed to help me without pause. Lifted Leah and put her in a chair and got her to triage while I parked and brought the other girls in. On my way to the ER I frantically started calling friends that lived near by. Neither Mandi or Denise answered but Denise called back and headed my way. Thankfully she took Bug and Hattie home, stayed with them and got them dinner. Because of course, these things only happen when Daddy is out of town.

They had bandaged her leg but asked me to clean up the exposed area around the wound, her feet and other leg. They gave me towels and I got to work. There was a fair amount on both of us. They came in and asked a few questions and then explained that they would give her a shot of lydocaine and then stitch her up. Of course the word shot sent her in to a panic, but I got her to calm down and then they sent us to XRAY. They wanted to make sure their was no glass in the wound. Once we got to the Xray room, they began to unbandage her leg. She panicked that she was getting a shot started saying it didn' hurt anymore and it was all better and kept trying to get up and off the bed, so then the bleeding picked up again and was spraying everywhere. Somehow they got it slowed down and the Xrays showed their was no glass.

Back in our room the NP and the doctor finally came in and were about to get started. They uncovered it and declared "we have a pumper" blood was going everywhere and they said she had hit an artery which made me panic. I had never seen so much blood but they assured me it wasn't a main artery and she would be fine.  The nurse had to change her shield there was so much blood. They started with water trying to clean it out a little. Then the lydocaine shot. She screamed and cried in a way had never heard before. I held her close but then I stared crying too. She calmed down but only until he started with the stitches. The doctor was great, asking her lots of questions. He asked her about kindergarten and she got sassy with him when he didn't remember that he said LSA. They had to stitch up the artery first and then 8 stitches on top. They had to put in anchor stitches because the wound is so close to her knee they are concerned about her potentially busting them out. I don't even want to think about that. Overall, she was a trooper. She hasn't complained about pain once since we left the hospital and has done well letting me change the bandages. I hope it continues to be this easy.

Lots of love and support has been flowing our way. Probably nearly100 facebook comments. My mom brought over some new movies and special snacks and candy hoping it would help her rest easily on the couch. Sanya, Lia and Ryan brought her a Barbie movie and a balloon. Ellen brought her balloons. Our babysitter Taryn brought her a stuffed animal and M&M's and then flowers were delivered from Grandma Tootie and Grandpa Dave as well. Oddly, people keep bringing me bottles of wine as well...and I'm not complaining!

Cardinal Nation

This should not be new information to any one that follows my blog, but I LOVE Cardinal's baseball. Always have, always will! Mitch and I have been fortunate to go to a handful of games with a few more left on the calendar. And we have certainly enjoyed having friends along. The Cardinals are having a stellar season. In first place in our division, up by two games with the best record in MLB AND the best on the road record. We have 4 or 5 players with batting averages in the 300's and three Cardinals are in the top five batting averages for MLB...Yadi, Craig and Carpenter. Things are looking good...really good.

We were fortunate to be able to go down on July 5th and stay the night while we took in some of the fourth of July festivities. Mitch's folks came to town and stayed with the girls. The game on the 6th was HOT but we brought home a win against Miami so I was happy. Then again on July 24th, we headed down and got a hotel room because on the 25th Mitch was flying out to Utah. Tracy and Jason came and met us in St. Louis and then we went to the game. They are almost as big of fans as we are! And Mitch and Jason work together and have gotten to be good friends. It was a great win against the Phillies. The pitcher, Westbrook, even stole a base. That NEVER happens. Anyway, looking forward to what the next few weeks bring and as always...definitely looking forward to the post season!

Scheel's Family Fun

Most people probably don't get all that excited about going to a Sporting Goods Store, that is until they've been to Scheel's in Springfield, IL. This place is crazy. Mitch was unaware of the fun to be had at Scheel's so he thought he was just going to run in without us, try on some boots and be done. I said no way! The girl had a great time. They posed with every animal along the way. We listened to Abraham Lincoln and Harry Truman. They played on the indoor playground for a while and of course they had to ride the ferris wheel. Now everytime I say we have to go to the store, they ask if its the one with the rides.

4th of July

We kept things pretty low key this year for the 4th of July. Mitch's parents and grandma Fran joined us for the holidays. According to them, we were having a raging party, LOL. I explained that they missed the epic cookout we had in June with over 40 people. Anyway, lots of our friends already had plans for the holiday either traveling or with family, but my friends Missy, Denise and Nicole were free so we had them head on over. Since we live so close to the lake, it's really easy to just walk over to the bank and watch the firework show. But before all that happened, the kids had a great time just playing in the yard. The grown ups played bags and there was PLENTY of food, of course. Tootie brought Rice Krispie bars with Carmel that were a huge hit and her Dorito salad. We provided the meat and I made an avocado dip. Denise brought mac-n-cheese and Bruschetta and sangria. Nicole brought a fiesta corn dish. Missy brought fruit kabobs in red white and blue. No one went hungry.

Grandma Tootie and Grandpa Dave stopped in Wisconsin for fireworks. They put on a good show for everyone. And brought tons of sparklers for the little ones. They were a big hit. And of course Ms. Denise brought glow sticks. While everyone went down to the fireworks I stayed behind and cleaned up the house. I could hear when the show was over, and so I got the goodies ready to make smores. Grandpa Dave and Mitch had the fire going in no time. The kids were super excited. Everyone got a treat as they sat around the campfire. Leah said "Hey, lets tell ghost stories." And little Roman got up and high tailed it out of there so fast. He was stuck to Grandma Fran's lap after that. It was so cute.
It was a great time, and it may have to become a Schultz Family Tradition!
