¿Truco o trato?

My girls just love Halloween…they always have. So there were lots of questions about what it would look like this year. I asked several people about trick-or-treating and they all said it wasn’t a thing. I looked everywhere for carving pumpkins…literally everywhere!!! I went to several stores for a few days in a row. I ended up with three tiny pumpkins. I even went to a farmers market. There was a lovely lady who spoke some English and she kind of laughed and said “no grande in Spain”.

We have the best bakery in Valencia right around the corner. And oh my!!! The treats they were sharing on social media were to die for…pun intended. They have beautiful chocolate lava cake with skulls and spiders and such. They had cupcakes topped with ghosts and jack-o-lanterns. But the doriyakis caught my eye! They are actually a Japanese treat they make here and have tweaked it a bit. It’s two pancake type breads stuffed with filling. In Japan it’s a sweet bean paste but in Spain they did Nutella and then decorated for Halloween. The girls loved the sugar skulls I got for them.

On Halloween night San Antonio de Benegebar was hosting a “Night of Terror” in the town square. They really try to go all out for the holidays, and it was super festive but missed the mark for us. They had inflatable bouncy houses, but my girls are a bit too old for that. And there were food stands with churros and cotton candy…the churros were delish! And they had a photo opportunity on stage with some ghouls but the line was for blocks so we passed on that. There was a small parade of the kids in costumes, which was really just them waking around the block.

Kiersten has a friend from the UK, Marley so her family (Darren and Becky) came to join and then our one American friends, Bruna and Bobby, Gabby from the swim team met us in the square as well. They are an American military family stationed here and we’ve enjoyed getting to know them. They got a tip about trick or treating. We walked for quite a while and found four houses passing out treats. I will say they were decorated up right and had smoke machines and holograms with screaming sounds. Hattie was scared…the rest of us loved it. So that was it. Our first Halloween in Spain. Different but still a great time!
