Yesterday, after 6+ miles, and my watch saying 60 flights of stairs, we thought we’d take it easy today. WRONG!
We got about 8 miles in today. We started at the temple of Zeus. How do those pillars stand on their own? Right now they are doing a lot of restoration and maintenance work, but still very impressive to see.
Next up, was the Panathenian stadium. It was originally built for ancient events and re-done for the first modern Olympics in 1896. The benches weren’t ready for the Olympics so they had wood seats, but later they were replaced with marble. Hattie and Bug sat on the thrones that were reserved for the king and queen.
We walked through the tunnels that were originally used for the animals that they would battle and then later for the athletes. Kiersten took a little run on the track, and the girls even stood on the podiums to receive their medals.
We walked through the Athens flea market but didn’t find much. We grabbed a few souvenirs in the tourist markets and then we headed on to the Athenian Agora. It encompasses quite a bit of ancient ruins. There were statues of the Iliad and the odyssey and Aphrodite too. Some of the pottery dated back to the late third millennium 1600 BC and even older. We finished up at the Temple of Hephaestus (460-415 BC), and then of course…more gelato!
