Thanks to COVID we are fortunate to experience two Fallas Festivals. The Fallas that was cancelled in March of 2021 took place in September, just days after we arrived in Spain. And now for 2022, we’re doing it again. We actually have travel planned for the girls break from school. So we took the weekend ahead of the festival to go check it out. The statues were still a work in progress but we saw a fair amount. It’s hard to imagine the time it takes to create these beautiful pieces of art and then it makes me so sad that they just burn them. But it’s tradition!
We could easily tell that this celebration would be much bigger than what we experienced in September. There were many more street markets in place and lots more food trucks. We planned it perfectly to be near ayuntamiento in time for the mascleta. We couldn’t get close enough to see it, but oh boy was it loud. And they have the mascleta twice daily pretty much for three weeks leading up to the finale (March 19). Several people have commented that were becoming “true Valencian’s” escaping all the noise. I’m glad we took the time to go check it out again, and of course the churros didn’t disappoint!
