Barcelona Day 2

Another busy day touring Barcelona! We started in the Gothic quarters and quickly found Fernando, el gato de Botero. He is a symbol of Barcelona and a popular photo spot. We snuck in around a tourist group for a shot. We made our way to a beautiful square with fantastic architecture and a fountain before finding Catedral de Barcelona, a stunning church that began construction in 1298 and was finished in 1420. Lots of walking today…so much to see!

We kept right on walking until we reached the Arc de Triumf built in 1888. It was originally the entrance to the Universal Exhibition of Barcelona. It’s still currently used for the Barcelona marathon and other fairs.

The Sagrado Familial Square was our next stop…and wow. It’s under construction (probably always under construction) where the current tower is being built in honor of the Virgin Mary. Construction began in 1883 and it was designed by the famous Spanish architect Gaudí, a masterpiece! It was previously a regular venue for fairs and markets but is currently only used for fairs at Christmas. Outside of St. Peter’s basilica at the Vatican it is the most visited church in Europe. When current construction is finished it will be the tallest church in the world.
