La Mocadorà

Today is La Mocadorà, which literally means "handkerchief" it is a popular celebration of the city of Valencia and its surroundings, which takes place on Valencian Community Day ( October 9 ), which is also the day of San Dionisio for Valencian lovers.

Mocadorà

The tradition consists of men giving women a handkerchief ( mocador in Valencian) in which there are wrapped sweets made with marzipan of different shapes and colors that represent fruits and vegetables from the Huerta de Valencia. many Valencians consider October 9 as the day of lovers (their particular Valentine ). It is also a tradition that women keep all the handkerchiefs that their partner gives them year after year since they started dating, they are proof of love and as such are preserved. I copied all of that from Wikipedia! No shame.

I bet Mitch knew all of this when I sent him to The bakery for the holiday treats. I told him I expect treats wrapped in a scarf every October 9th from here on out!!! While he was downtown he noticed a parade so he came home to get us and we went back. We missed the parade but we’re just in time to watch the traditional Spanish dancers. I think we’re going to enjoy learning about their customs.
