When in DC: Part 1

We’ve arrived!!! In the Nation’s capital, that is. Just one more step in our never ending process to get to Spain. After getting our expedited passports last week, and after the last fiasco with trying to get our visas we weren’t taking any chances. We got in the car yesterday, August 23rd, and drove the 12 hours to the District of Columbia. Actually we stayed in Frederick, Maryland Monday night but you get the idea. Driving through Ohio, West Virginia and Pennsylvania again made me wish we’d taken a few more days and gone North to New Jersey. It’s been a very long time since we’ve done that drive along I-70. The girls certainly enjoyed the views.

Tuesday morning we arrived at the congressional Holiday Inn. We asked if we could just park early but they said we could check in, our room was ready. We were right across the street from the US Department of Education…it’s HUGE! But we dropped off our bags and hit Pennsylvania Avenue.

First stop was Capitol Hill. The Mall is so massive, but impressive. It has been nearly twenty years since my last visit. It was pretty special to share it with the girls. We got an up close look at the Ulysses S. Grant statue. I love that this trip presented is so many opportunities to talk history. Because after that we went straight to Ford Theater. Being from the Land of Lincoln we had to see it. It gave us a chance to talk about Lincoln’s time in Illinois, and his family home that was just miles from my family home.
