When in DC: Part 3

We quite literally did everything that could be done outside in the span of 6 hours!!! After the Washington Monument we went to the WWII memorial. It is so beautifully done. We talked about the start of the War, how the US entered the war, how it ended, and the family members we have that served. There was a wall of stars and each star represented 100 American deaths. It was interesting that they had a sign posted about putting your feet in the pool/fountain. The sign shared that Americans celebrated in the European Fountains at the end of the war. It was a moment that I needed to capture.

Next up was the Vietnam Memorial. I had a hard time with this one. I know people that served in Vietnam. We talked to the girls about how the names on the wall were mostly men and women that would have been the same age as their grandparents. We talked about Papa trying to enlist and Tony in the Marines. They had books set out where you could search to find the location of your loved ones name. It was all so heavy, and a reminder that our freedom isn’t free.

I wanted to visit the Korean War memorial. My grandpa, Leslie Schaumburg served in the Korean War. He was in the Air Force for several years, but sadly the memorial was closed for maintenance/construction. So we kept on moving to the Lincoln Memorial. The word impressive doesn’t do it justice! And when you get to the top, where he sits in his chair, looking out over the reflection pool…Washington Monument and more it’s powerful. You can’t help but reflect on all the things that have transpired in this place. I told the girls about my fifth grade teacher Mr. Montgomery who would make his class memorize the Gettysburg address. Sadly, I don’t remember too much of it anymore.
