This morning we left Vienna and took the train west to Salzburg. After checking into our apartment we got started at the Hohensalzburg fortress. The Hohensalzburg Fortress is one of the largest castles of Europe and the largest preserved fortress of central Europe. It has been home to several Salzburg diocese archbishops. One of the most interesting was Wolf Dietrich who fought with Bavaria over the salt trade. He was taken prisoner in the fortress and kept in isolation for many years until his death.
The castle museum focuses on military history, the Rainer Regiment museum illustrates the past of the former Salzburg infantry regiment. There was a lot of World War I memorabilia…I'm a bit rusty with my WWI history.
The Dungeon had a great display that talked about the reformation…a great intro to discuss Martin Luther with the girls. It mentioned how the villagers were expressing dissent with the Catholic Church and the church began to realize they were losing power in the region. There was protest and unrest. We talked about Martin Luther and the importance of “reformation” Sunday for Lutherans.
The Panoramic Tour gave the most spectacular views of the cities and the Alps. We took it in for a few minutes and we’re so thankful when a kind gentleman offered to take our picture. Looking forward to seeing what else Salzburg has to offer.
