The Old Town Hall Astronomical Clock

Wow! The Astronomical Clock outside of Old Town Hall in Prague dates back to the 14th century. We read about how people would crowd around for the clock to strike the hour just to see the apostles parade through the two windows. It was quite spectacular and Kiersten noticed very quickly that the clock also had the zodiac signs. We managed to be there when the clock struck noon so we got the longest show!

After we watched the “show” we headed in to tour the Old Town Hall. The Chapel of the Virgin Mary was beautiful, consecrated in 1381. They would have church in the chapel before their town hall meetings. The Old Council Hall has been preserved since the beginning of the 15th century. One of the coolest things was the interior view of the apostles that parade through the windows of the clock. We figured out that the one holding the serpent was St. John. St. Phillip holds the cross. The originals apostles are in the Prague City Museum. The second set was damaged in a fire after Nazi attack in 1945, so the current set was put in place in 1948.

They offered an elevator service to the top, but there was quite a few people waiting so we decided to do it the old fashioned way. It was quite a hike, all by ramp to the top. When arrived at the top of the tower we were rewarded with phenomenal views of the Old Town Square. Breathtaking!
